Te Tūranga – The opportunity  

RNZ has an opportunity for an experienced and ambitious sports journalist to join New Zealand's award-winning public media newsroom.

We're looking for someone who consistently produces original journalism - breaking news, developing exclusive stories, uncovering issues that matter and providing analysis that helps audiences understand the biggest moments in sport.

You'll be equally comfortable chasing a breaking story, cultivating long-term sources and delivering compelling journalism across audio and digital platforms.

Te Mahi – About the job

As a senior member of the sports team, you'll generate and deliver original sports journalism across RNZ's news, current affairs and digital platforms.

You'll be expected to build and maintain a strong network of contacts across New Zealand sport, identify stories before our competitors and produce journalism that is accurate, fair and distinctive.

Your work will include:

• Breaking exclusive sports stories and developing original reporting.
• Producing insightful analysis and enterprise journalism that goes beyond match results.
• Covering major breaking news and significant sporting events.
• Researching, writing and producing stories for radio, digital and social platforms.
• Building and maintaining trusted relationships with athletes, administrators, coaches and key industry contacts.
• Presenting sports bulletins and contributing live reporting when required.
• Producing audio content using appropriate recording, editing and production techniques.

Ōu Pūkenga - About You 

You will have some experience in covering sport news, have a passion for sport and how it is covered, a nose for news and strong knowledge.

You will:

• A strong track record of breaking original stories and delivering exclusive journalism.
• Excellent writing skills and the ability to produce clear, engaging and accurate copy.
• Strong analytical skills and the ability to provide context and insight, not just report events.
• A demonstrated ability to develop and maintain high-quality contacts and sources.
• A commitment to the highest standards of accuracy, fairness and public-interest journalism.
• The ability to produce high-quality content across multiple platforms.
• Confidence working collaboratively in a fast-paced newsroom.

As part of a small, friendly team, you’ll be available to work shifts that include weekends, early mornings and evenings for sports coverage.

This is a permanent full-time role based in Auckland, but other locations will be considered.
