Te Mahi – About the job

We’re looking for an experienced and proactive Overnight Producer to join our award-winning news team. This role is key to shaping our Morning Report programme by ensuring international stories are timely, relevant, and engaging for our audience.

As the Overnight Producer, you’ll be the driving force behind our morning news coverage, sourcing and developing compelling international content while NZ sleeps. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Monitoring international news, identifying key stories and developing angles
  • Researching and preparing detailed briefing notes, intros and interview questions
  • Booking and coordinating talent, both locally and internationally
  • Editing audio for a New Zealand audience
  • Collaborating with wider news, studio and digital teams to produce quality content for radio and online
  • Crossing live into RNZ’s First Up to wrap overnight events
  • Cross live into RNZ’s Morning Report as needed for big breaking stories 

Ōu Pūkenga - About You

We’re after someone with strong editorial judgement, great writing skills, and a nose for a good story. You’ll thrive on deadlines, have experience producing news content, and be comfortable working independently. You should also bring:

  • A tertiary qualification in journalism or a related field
  • A strong grasp of global current affairs
  • Great audio editing skills
  • The ability to write sharp headlines and focused intros
  • Confidence working with media law and editorial standards
  • A collaborative mindset and excellent communication skills
